At #29, this is “Way To Go”-2006, produced by 9th Wonder. This song, for those who don’t know, is from my Cloud 9 EP that I did with 9th Wonder.This was the official 1st single off the project and is what pretty much kicked the door in for me as an artist. When I did the record, I didn’t even plan on this being a single, I just wrote it, recorded it, and kept it moving, When the EP was done, however, I chose this as the lead off, and I happy to say that I made a pretty smart choice. This was easily the most recognized and successful song on the CD, and even got my YouTube game popping when I shot the video with my man Tee Smif and my home girl Laura Adibe. The song is street but sorta light and fun at the same time. Its a good mixture, and it was a perfect tone setter and introduction to anyone contemplating on purchasing the project. This was the eighth song I did out of the 12, so this came sorta towards the end of the recording process. At #28, this is “Never Sleep-2007″, produced by Illmind. This is a joint from my Corner Store Classic mixtape that I dropped in 2007. This was the last song I recorded for the tape, and to me was one of my faves. Illmind sent me this beat like 2 years prior, and I knew that I would use it at some point, so I held on to it for awhile. When I was finishing up the tape, I felt like I needed one more “grind music” type of joint to really embody the concept of the tape, so I dug through the files and pulled this beat up, started writing, and 30 minutes later I was in the booth recording. I sent it to Illmind and he loved it, and then I threw it on the tape. Corner Store Classic was always planned to be a concept tape, aiming to be a soundtrack to the corner stores of America, and I feel like this song was a perfect fit for the story line. “So at #27, I figured I’d do something a little different. This is a freestyle I did for Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg back in 2007. For those who don’t know, Rosenberg is a DOPE radio DJ up here in NYC. He’s pretty much the hope that dudes like myself, Little Brother, Torae, Black Milk, Jay Electronica, etc, have to get burn on the air (for now. Tides will be changing soon tho!). He’s pretty much THE DUDE. So when he first came up to Hot 97, he hit me and asked for a freestyle. I of course said “no problem”, and then he said “just make sure its on a Dilla beat”. That’s when I declared that Rosenberg is THE DUDE. The thing about this freestyle though, is that its REALLY a freestyle. The concept of a freestyle is starting to become ancient, and thats corny. I grew up freestyling all day, every day, every where, and most new rappers can’t say the same. So I literally walked in the booth and freestyled, start to finish, one take, off the dome. I then listened to it a few times to learn it and proceeded to do the ad libs. I sent it to Pete that afternoon and he played it that same night, and then again, and again, for the next 4 Sundays. Like I said, he’s THE DUDE. So once again, this is my Peter Rosenberg Freestyle from 2007 for his Hot 97 show. Enjoy. PS: the mixtape and the album are both so close to completion its scary. At #26 in the series, this is “I Still Love Her” featuring Sic Osyrus, produced by OZ. Me and Sic did this in 2007, and it was on his mixtape Sic-O-Nomics pt 2. When he hit me with the record, I liked where the beat was going with the Common and Kanye samples, so it made it easier to write. The “we don’t wanna hear that weak shit no mo’” was real dope, and I just went from there with the verse. I remember writing this really quickly, because its really just recalling and expressing things that I already feel. Realistic topics are easy to pen, that’s why everything I pen is pretty much realistic ;o). So at #24 in he series, this is “Submission-2006″ featuring Chaundon & Sean Price, produced by 9th Wonder. This is a joint the 3 of us did back in Summer ‘06 when I was in NC working on the last few Cloud 9 songs. Some of you probably heard it when it was released earlier this year on Chaundon’s album Carnage (if you don’t have it, hit up amazon.com now and get that). 9th did the beat, and I started penning my verse instantly and jumped right in the booth. Chaundon followed up next something crazy, and then Sean Price closed it out ridiculously. The outcome was classic in my opinion. You have no idea how much I tried to use this record on Cloud 9 and then Corner Store Classic, but Dunny (Chaundon) always said he wanted it on his album, so I knew it would go to good use. At #22, this is “Good Morning America-2006″ featuring Poca, produced by Hasan Insane. This is a joint I did for my homegirl Poca’s mixtape back in ‘06. Poca is one of my favorite female artists coming up right now. Her flow is real unorthodox; I call her the female Freeway. She puts alotta passion into what she writes and is real big on grind music, which is right up my alley. She’s finishing up her new tape now so look for that real soon. As far as the track, the beat spoke to me, hands down. I heard the sample off top and fell in love with it. I remembered the Black Star song “Respiration” (one of the greatest hip hop songs EVER! Quote that) where Mos said “the new moon rode high in the cloud of the metropolis,…” and I kinda saw that line coming true when I heard the beat, so I decided to start the song off with that. My man Hasan Insane did the beat, and he bodied with this one. So here it is, “Good Morning America-2006″ featuring Poca, produced by Hasan Insane. Holla. So at #20, I figured I’d make it really special by doing a 3 for 1 edition all from Cloud 9, my collabo EP with 9th Wonder. Cloud 9 is a 12 song EP that 9th Wonder and I did in 2006. The project was written and recorded in 3 days total, and wound up becoming one of the most talked about and respected projects that year. I always tell 9th that I got him for life on whatever because he let me kick in the door and get my name known with that project, and we really just did it to do it. 9th was the one who said “lets put it out for the people to enjoy”. Im very proud of this whole experience and greatful to all the fans who supported and became fans after hearing this EP. Here’s a quick breakdown of 3 of my faves off of the project.

“The Bodega” was the first song to leak from the cd. 9th actually leaked it himself which started the bidding war between the indie labels wanting to release it. This song is a day in front of the store, simple as that. I wrote it easily because its what I know. Everything that I wrote on this track (like always) really happened. Whether you’re from New York, Atlanta, Detroit, Baltimore, Compton or any other hood, you can relate to this. There’s a corner in every city, with a store sitting right on it, open 24/7.

“Stop Fooling Yourself” is a description of the blurred line between tryna go to college and tryna keep the lights on. Sometimes the college struggle is just as hard as the street struggle, or at least tryna get into one. Needless to say, this also really happened.

“You & Me” is a song that all my female fans were accquired off of. I originally wrote an R&B song to it and was gonna sell it to a female singer, but I got greedy and decided to keep the beat. So I wrote some of my life to it and put it on the EP. I love this record. We’ve all been through this at one point or another. And yep, you guessed it, this all really happened.

So we’re at #18, and this one is “For The Love Of The Game” feat. MC, prod. by drawzilla. This is a joint that my man Drawzilla wanted me to do for his compilation album in late 2007. He sent me the beat and pretty much said “its all on you, do whatever the track tells you too”, so that’s what I did. The record is really me talking to the music as if it were a girl im dating. People have done that in the past, so I put a twist on it as far as the outcome and my decisions on staying with her. Once I finished the record, Draw got his man MC to sing on the hook, and he definitly got busy with it. Drawzilla did the beat, and he’s been doing big things with the music for awhile now (MTV placements, Remy Ma joints, etc.), so look out for him. Here’s “For The Love Of The Game” feat. At #17 in the series, this joint is called “Good Looking-2007″ featuring AC, produced by Hi-Tek. This is a joint that I did with AC in 2007. He had this concept to say good looking to everyone who ever helped or hated through out his career thus far. I dug the idea so I knew it would be a dope record. Hi-Tek did the beat, and it has that vintage Tek sound that he’s known for. If you have AC’s mixtape from early 2007 then you’ve heard this before, but if you dont, enjoy the new old. So why not make it a Justus League week, right? Number 14 in the series finds us at “Speed Racing-2006″ featuring Little Brother & Chaundon, produced by 9th Wonder. This is a beat that I picked out from 9th back when we first met in 2005. I did the hook on the spot and the verse followed right after. For awhile I never did anything with the record, and then Tay (Phonte of LB) called me and said that he and Pooh were doing a Gangsta Grillz tape with Dj Drama and wanted to know if I was down to get on it. Of course I was more than willing to be apart of what became a classic tape. So Tay said that he really liked the Speed Racing joint and wanted to finish it up, which was definitly fine by me. Next thing you know, me, Pooh, Tay, and Chaundon had a cult fave on our hands. So here it is; “Speed Racing f/Little Brother & Chaundon-2006″, produced by 9th wonder.
