Last week, Three/21 shot the dynamic VA duo, The Clipse and Killa Cam in NYC for their latest track “Popular Demand” or “Popeyes” (for short) off the upcoming album “Til The Casket Drops”. Despite a few crazy moments such as the NYPD trying to shut us down and blacklist us about 4 times in 4 seperate locations. Luckily Popeyes came to our rescue and let us shoot Cam inside during business hours in front of a whole bunch of surprised customers. Shout out to Steven Victor and the entire Re-Up Gang squad for holding us down. Come holla at ya uncle…

So it looks like Pharrell, Chad & Shae will be joined by Rhea (a Toronto native of Guyanese descent) on their fourth studio album, Instant Gratification, which is set to drop in 2010.

“Musically, we’re just somewhere else [with her],” Pharrell told MTV News. “The music is now very 3-D. It’s something you have to hear. But you’ll see. We’re definitely somewhere else. I want to leave that impact moment for when you purchase your download and you purchase your CD. The music is very three-dimensional. We’re just really excited. We feel like N.E.R.D. has always been the punks of hip-hop and the outcasts of alternative music — just a little different. But this time, we’re taking no prisoners.”

The Neptunes artist explained Rhea might be petite, at just 5-foot-4, but her booming voice and her classical background blend in with the genre-bending trio of N.E.R.D., also including Chad Williams and Shae.

“Now you have this little Tinkerbell that’s just stepped in and has been amazing,” he said. “It’s made it a fun process. We can go in so many more directions, because we have the vocal support.”

I really hope these guys don’t turn all BEP on us. But to be honest, I think this definitely has potential to be great. Here’s hoping for the best! And for a slight sneak peak on what to expect, hit the jump to check out footage of them performing 2 new joints in Miami Beach the other night.

“We wanted to make a record that speaks to kids. [1] There’s a couple of lewd words there, but I wanted to make sure that kids heard this record and felt inspired,” Williams told MTV News. “That’s why there’s a little bit of anger to it. There’s anger in his verses, there’s anger in my chorus. That’s why I say spiteful things at the top [of the record]. There’s anger there, because there’s heat. Because you’re young and people are telling you what you can and can’t do. Unacceptable.”

“We did it all by phone,” [2] Williams said. “One-hundred percent. Phone and e-mail. I’ve never done that before in my life. I just sent him the joint, ’cause he beat me up for the whole album. He was just kinda like, ‘I need something to really tell a story.’ And I was like, ‘OK.’ And I sent him this track. I said, ‘I’m sending you clouds with 808s [drums] under it.’ There’s just clouds, and it’s expansive. You can just speak. It’s a blank canvas. Then I sent him the hook and played it for him, and he lost his mind.”

Williams said the song was made the day Jay-Z was mastering his album, and he believes the rapper held off on completing his album until he finished the song. The result, according to Williams, is another classic.

“[Just] the attack on it,” he said of the song. “Ferocious.”

[1] So the line “I might hit two sisters” speaks to the kids to inspire them? Um, alright.

[2] I’ve never been a fan of emailing in songs, particularly if the artist and producer have already worked with each other in the past. I just feel that that energy and magic that comes from the producer and artist working in-studio is lost over the dot com era. But hey, that’s why I do this and I’m not a rapper or producer.

This song took a while, but it grew on me. Till The Casket Drops, October 20th, making it probably the first album I purchase this year.

I haven’t heard much of anything from Tre Little since his work with Nickel Nine (*bumps Malcolm X). But it seems as if that will change as he’s dropping off three new mixtapes in a Past, Present, Future series. Up first is Volume: Past which features two discs of material w/ the likes of Royce Da 5′9″, Pharrell, Eminem, Clipse, Jenny Jones, Kelis, etc that you may or may not have heard in the “past”.
