Just spotted this clip (at NR) of Elzhi going a capella during a Slum Village performance at the Conga Room in L.A. And the verse is cool and all, and I’ma let him finish, but… where the hell is ELmatic!?

Alright ya’ll… as you can see from the title I’m gonna be switching things up from now on. For the first 32 volumes, I was using the Tapedeck as a post to place tracks I didn’t feel deserved it’s own post, tracks I missed, etc. But over the months I’ve been wanting to put up mixes with my personal playlists. So from here on out the Tapedeck will revolve around what I’m actually bumpin. There won’t be a specific day or routine for these… just when I have time I’ll put together something for ya’ll. I’m thinking of doing concepts, themes, etc. And for this volume I’ve included tracks from the likes of Blu, Pharoahe Monch, Jay-Z, Royce Da 5′9″, Eminem, Elzhi, Little Brother, Mos Def, Chino XL, The Roots, Kanye West, Brother Ali and more. The overseas homies at splash!-Mag invited Black Milk, lzhi and Devin The Dude to partake in their Chanel Zero Sessions. Black and El are up top, Devin under the cut.

It’s not another joint off Elmatic (can we atleast get one full song please!?) but any new Elzhi is great. Here he joins the Philly emcee/producer for a new joint off his upcoming album, Cassette City, dropping July 7th.

Figuring out what the boy Lushlife is all about isn’t a piece of cake.  With a look more Vice Magazine than The Source, a production style that sounds like DJ Premier chopping up Brian Wilson and Burt Bacharach, and a flow to make you think there’s a VERY worn copy of Illmatic in his past somewhere, the Philly emcee/producer isn’t easy to pin down.  But that’s part of the fun, isn’t it?  A perfect example of these intersecting aesthetics, In Soft Focus takes a pastel-colored golden-era-influenced beat with a sample taken from lo-fi indie rock champ Ariel Pink and fuses it with Lush’s own flow, and then goes for the win with a verse from rising star and Slum Village member Elzhi.  Sound too ambitious to work?  Not on your life.

Damn… I know I wasn’t the only one sitting there upset at the world, when Drake interrupted this joint on Comeback Season to say that he hadn’t paid for the beat so we couldn’t hear the rest of the song (aka Elzhi’s verse). Well — thanks to Heinz (via FWMJ) — now we can! Very dope way to finish off the night!
