DOOM seems to delight in being an enigma, so I suppose it should come as no surprise that when we asked him to give us a video talking about the rarities mix he just assembled for Gold Dust, he delivered this unsettling, darkly lit, confrontational clip, starting with “Listen up, you punks…” We don’t know what to make of it, but it’s clear he didn’t come to play. Unexpected Guests is out now on Gold Dust.

JRocc played some exclusive Madvillain (DOOM + Madlib) on Fat Beats Radio. If you haven’t heard, Stones Throw recently confirmed a follow up to Madvillainy in 2010. Madlib is one of my favorite producers and DOOM is just on another planet. If you’re a fan, watch for those Madvillain tracks to be popping up soon.

Lex Records just slipped out a new mixtape of MF DOOM, this one by Pipomixes came from listening to DOOM’s whole catalog. It’s totally unofficial (even though the label is helping hype it.) It’s also totally dope.

There’s no tracklist, no artwork, nothing. Just one large file for everyone to enjoy. SHAKE UPDATE: The tape actually has a title (which I’ve changed below) and artwork. Enjoy.

DOOM is one of the most original and uncompromising voices in hip-hop. From his work in the 90’s with the seminal KMD to his legendary releases under a variety of aliases including MF Doom, Madvillain, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, Dangerdoom & more, his prolific body of work has always valued artistic integrity and creativity over anything else. As numerous and varied as his albums are, DOOM also has a thick catalog of guest appearances, remixes, non-album tracks, & vinyl only singles. For the first time, Unexpected Guests presents many of these hard to find tracks as a mix CD, executed and overseen by the Super Villain himself.

With a list of co-conspirators which includes marquee level names such as Talib Kweli, Ghostface & GZA as well as underground heroes Vast Aire, CountBass D & Kurius, the music on this disc highlights DOOM’s ever-present trademark wit and taste for raw and ominous beats. On “Trap Door,” he spits couplets like “No curse words / DOOM the worst church nerd verse heard” over a plucked bass and guitar line from producer Jake One that sounds like the funkiest spy movie soundtrack imaginable. “Sniper Elite” sees the emcee united with the late J Dilla, and is one of the many tracks featured that has yet to see an official CD release. The album will also feature a never before heard live version of DOOM’s classic “I Hear Voices” from the Operation Doomsday album.

Peppered with his signature comic book dialogue and vintage sound clips, Unexpected Guests presents a treasure trove of DOOM obscurities which should shed light on material that even some hardcore fans may have missed. It’s a frenetic, virtuosic look at a true hip-hop original.

HipHopDX recently caught up with MF DOOM to talk on a few things. From his impostor shows character direction, retirement of the DOOM character, how homo Batman is, masculinity bitchy-ness in hip hop, his family, upcoming projects (Ghostface, Madlib, etc) and more. Great interview.

DX: What’s the status of the album with Ghost?
DOOM: Now that this one is out the way, progress will be picking up. It’s about 40% done. Forty-two percent done, if I had to say. But then it’s hard to gauge because everything is speeding up now, so it could probably be done real fast, within two months I could have it done. Madvillain seems like it’s closer to being done. I’m working on the shit now. That shit’ll be done within the next two months. I don’t know when they gonna put it out. Otis [Madlib] is the producer, so I don’t really have to do too much. I think on this record, we’re mixing it up. I’ll have more production on this one.

Side note: I had heard about these guys waaaaay back in 2006, when I caught them opening up for a Slum Village show. I’ve not heard from them since until now.
