Kanye West – Through The Wire (Book Preview)

Kanye links up with Bill Plympton to put together another book.

Through the Wire is a graphic memoir that illustrates the lyrics of twelve Kanye West songs to tell his story, from his decision to drop out of college to pursue his dreams in music, through his days spent folding chinos at the Gap while struggling at night to make a name as a producer, through the pivotal car accident that eventually set him on the course to stardom and the epiphany of realizing exactly who he had become.

Hit the jump for Amazon’s write up, the cover and a few preview shots. UPDATE: I also included We Were Once a Fairytale, a short film by Spike Jonze.

Hitting shelves on November 10th. Pre-order now. Shouts to ICE on the heads up.

In the film, Kanye plays himself drunk at a club acting belligerent and boastful, telling starstruck club-goers that the song playing in the club is his. He wanders into a side room where he encounters a beautiful woman. They start having sex and then he passes out on her leopard print dress. When he comes to, he finds himself in the VIP room with his pants down – he was hallucinating and fucking the pillow. The realization startles him and he rushes to the bathroom where he vomits what look like rose petals.

Then it gets weird.

Kanye finds a bowie knife in the bathroom and cuts into his stomach, spilling a torrent of more petals. He digs in the knife deeper and then with his hand rips out a small furry rodent, like a demon, only its quite cute. When Kanye realizes it’s connected to him with an umbilical cord, he pulls it hard, ripping it out of him for good. He then puts the demon on the sink and hands him a tiny bowie knife to fit the critter’s scale who then uses it to commit hari kari.

on the whole..that video was creepy..aint gon lie i was gettin into it tho

  8. That video was, abstract to say the least.

  9. Kanye is definitely artistic.

Maybe we can get some Movie Music Videos from him now.

  10. Where’s sunday soothing session @? Book seems pretty interesting i’ll pick it up. That video is strange

  11. Ima cop from B&B, looks informative! Anybody know which records he covers in the book?

  12. book looks dope, but that vid was odd….im sure someone will draw meaning out of it tho…spike jonze is a briliant director and artist, but not feeling that joint. yea i know the critter is supposed to be like kanyes wild side or something but yea….but i guess its “art” so cool?

  13. Yeah, that movie was on some weird shit, but still really interesting to say the least….lol

  14. video was mad fucking weird, but i couldnt stop watching it, it was kinda sad when the lil furry feller ousted itself tho =[ LoL

  15. i loved the vid man, shit was dope..couldn’t stop watching it afte ri hit play

  16. vid was cool gettin that book

  17. i dont know if that many of the others noticed Eric Koston and Mike Carroll (Both legendary pro skateboarders) who had cameos in the video. Mike Carroll was the white dude that Fonzworth Bentley beat up and Koston was just in the VIP area with his date….LOL…this video was a little outlandish..but entertaining….makes me wonder WTF is going on through the mind of Mr. Kanye West?!?!?

  18. wow. that video was like my saturday night.

  19. Yo, Kanye, I’m really happy for you. I’m going to let you finish. But Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.

But seriously, I love spike to death and this just solidifes.

  20. I used to go out there, that’s foxtail.

  21. Spike + Ye = Something good. I noticed the Mike Carrol and Eric Koston cameos too, that was surprising but I know Spike Jonze skates with them so not too surprised

  22. ^^Spike is part owner of Podium Distribution..(Girl Skateboards/Lakai/Fourstar etc)

  23. What I gathered from this video is basically this (bare with me guys)

Kanye West is actually saying that his “ego” has to die (the critter) in order to complete himself and start over as a new man. He was in the club braggin about his money. Notice he’s in there braggin to people that it’s his song playing in the club and trying to get at every girl, but once he gets with that one chick…at the end of the day, he’s alone. He has nobody to relate shit with. His fiancee’s gone, his mother is dead. Amber Rose? We know she trying to be a star. But Kanye’s all alone with his pants down. Shit is fun when he’s in the club but when he’s sober, he’s miserable and lonely.

The rose petals are a symbol of completion, of consummate achievement and perfection. He threw it all away because he cannot be fully complete with himself until the ego dies. So he let it kill itself ’cause he got humbled.

  24. This is certainly dope. It’s this isn’t too much, I will definitely cop this. I would like to get that GLOW IN THE DARK Photo Book too…but I don’t know…we in a recession…lol. I know he has a DVD somewhere yo…he has too! I pray that he’s just doing this Photo Book thing FIRST cuz he knows if he says a DVD is coming out, no one would buy the book.

I remember seeing cameras at the concert and backstage when I was at the concert back in June 2008, so I know he has to have footage. Even a DVD about the prep and backstage stuff would be suitable.

  25. ^ Co-Sign Whatupsucka

  26. haha that’s Mayer Hawthorne playing at 5:50, “When I Said Goodbye”
    Video is great.

  27. Whose idea was this to make this video I mean i dont see how it has any relevance to anything yeezy has done…it just another demonstration of how coked-out kanye has taken over and the rapper/producer who did College Dropout and Be is long goneeee

  28. ^^ you’re an idiot.

and i agree with whatupsucka, all in all the book & video are dope and kanye is constantly creating in new and innovative ways. people should appreciate more and hate less.

  29. ^ What Premise Ptah said.

Definitely coppin’ the book. Anything to do with pre-EGO Kanye is classic. And now I guess post ego will return him to his roots.

  30. Kanye is back.

  31. this honestly might not even be acting, just a documentary

  32. can you get a copy of the nightmares remix playing in the background? (by Squeak E Clean of NASA)

  33. WHAT THE FUCK

  34. HOLY SHIT!!!!

That video psyched me the FUCK OUT! At first I was like wtf? Then as it went on I got so engrosed into it, I didn’t even know what was happening, he was like throwing up pink shit.

And then I thought the niga was gonna commit suicied but then it was insane how he pulled out that creature thing.

I think that guy that posted earlier was right. Its a movie about his ego/ how hes so alone when hes sober that he keeps his mind elswear.

This is really refreshing in a genre where people repeat the same type of shit over and over. Good look.

  35. WHERE’S THE BATHROOM?!

  36. [nod]@whatupsucka

  37. Why are you all saying KanYe is back?

This was clearly shot before the taylor swift incident. So if he is back why did he act like a fool at the MTV awards.

I think he’s talented but at he is unable differentiate between dreams and reality

  38. WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT TAYLOR SWIFT?

  39. if u are going to or are even considering buying this book go ahead and kill yourself

  40. dopest video in a long time.
    and its not even musical.

  41. wtf? Kanye is back? Is there a link to a song i didnt see? and i might check the book out one day at Borders or sumthing but i dont think imma buy it…and the vid is cool and all but sumtimes i feel Kanye tries too hard to be “different” or “artistic”..idk

  42. We see Kanye drunk every awards show, thats not how he acts!

  43. this was def b4 the VMAs and during the time when he was tellin evrybody that he needed to change how acts but we all kno how that ended up… maybe he’ll make a sequel

  44. Yeah really though, taylor who? I think Ye is gonna put his ego in the shitter and start making real music again. At least I hope so.

  45. look i get all the deep shit they were trying to do but that shit was fucking hilarious lol at the black mullet

  46. Not sure why people are saying this was before the VMAs. If you pour enough time into it, that video could’ve been done in 2-5 days, especially since it’s more reliant on the animations than the recorded footage, soooo…

  47. Looks like it will be GREAT. I look forward to it…
