MEKA: Two years ago, this site started on the foundation of two things: a platform for the two of us to put potential viewers on to the music we liked, and a voice for the Left Coast that wasn’t heard previously. I, however, also had another motive for the site: desperation.
Two weeks prior to the site’s debut, I had lost my job of two years in commercial production due to the impending writer’s strike that forced studios to trim the fat in order to save money. It was the first time in nearly seven years that I didn’t have a job and to be honest I was scared out of my mind, as no amount of college training had prepared me for unemployment. So in between scrambling for a job and freelancing like gangbusters to keep my lights on, I only started doing one daily post on the site: Meka’s Soul Mix Show, just to keep at the very least my sanity in check.
Eventually I landed another job, but by then I had slowly begun to put more input into the site that the ideal of “working my way up the professional ladder to success” wasn’t as all it’s cracked up to be. Eventually I left from that job, deciding to throw my energy and faith into something that, while was starting to catch on with the masses, I was unsure what it would do for me and my career. Seems that I’ve made the right choice, as not only was I hired to head the new media department at a digital marketing agency, I was able to accomplish a life’s goal of mine by moving to New York, thanks in part to this site.
Long story short, if there is anything to take from my long-winded diatribe it’s that you should never lose focus on your goals and dreams if you’re really passionate about it. I’d like to give props to everyone who’s ever been instrumental in this site’s growth, and I thank you all for lining my pockets sticking around with us for so long.
SHAKE: I guess my “story” is a bit in reverse as I started 2dbz with a full time gig at the slave ship some of you know as HipHopDX; and now I’m unemployed with only my free lance design work (ArtByShake.com /plug) keeping me a float. The past few months have really tested my strength and faith in this site as I’ve dedicated a lot (some say too much) of my time to making it one of the best sites on the internets. And doing it with little to no (financial) return. Regardless… the site was never birthed to make myself and Mek millionaires (although, it would be nice haha) so it’s running just as we imagined. Well… not exactly. I never thought something we started just 2 years ago would blossom to a place where over 400k different people visit a month. That’s pretty intense and I thank you all for being a part of this.
I will say this… even without the cashflow, the rewards of (co-)running 2DopeBoyz have been fantastic. As a fan of music since my mind (and my one good ear) could comprehend what I was listening to I’ve always been a “taker”. Sure I pay for albums still and go to shows when folks decide Vegas is a good place to stop. But I’ve never had a chance to “give back” to the artist. Now-a-days I’m more instrumental in the success of artists that have made songs that have got me through the darkest times of my life as well as guided me to the the brightest. I now find myself having artists I’ve been a listening to for years reaching out and showing genuine appreciation of me helping promote their projects, etc. It’s a surreal experience every time and I’m thankful for it each day. I’ve built a lot of great relationships (and gained absurd amounts of haters) along the way. And I’m sure these times will continue for years to come. Let’s get it!

Good story from the both of you. As I am now trying to stick with my career/dream (television production) even though I can’t seem to find much work it gets hard to not get frustrated and not give up. But enough about me (although I could use some help landing a gig plug..plug) I definitely enjoy the site and you pretty much have the same musical tastes that I have. Those Shake Tapedeck’s 1 & 2 are (2)dope. I hope some of the artists really do appreciate the love you give them. And by the way I think Skyzoo The Salvation is one of the best cd’s of the year easy.

One day I decided “FUCK IT” and quit and decided to move back home to try and get my foot in the music biz. Luckily I’m now working for a label and with ArtOfficial.

This site is dope and I check it multiple times a day always hoping for a new post. Prior to visiting the site, I had a very limited musical selection. You guys have opened my ears to dope music and extremely talented, lesser-known artists. I’ve downloaded many mixtapes off the site like “Okay, I’ll give this dude a chance” and then listen and be like “Yeah this shit is nice.”

this site is really great. I continue to support hip-hop (by buying it not just talking about it!) 2dbz has put me on great artists (j. cole for example) and clearly paved the way for some serious things (you clearly had a part in the slaughterhouse train) for others. i think making a premium account type thing wouldn’t be a bad thing, it would weed out all the haters (and plain dumb-fuckers that stay in the comment section so often) as well as put some money in your pockets (i know the semantics would never work perfectly). needless to say big up and keep it goin!

The is seriously the only blog I visit because I avoid ignorance that I would have to witness if I visited other blogs. I do, unfortunately, have to visit some message boards to get albums when they leak early (for obvious reasons). Don’t worry, if I feel like an artist put a lot of effort into something and I like it, I buy it. CD’s are like a massive experiment where purchases = positive reinforcement as far as I’m concerned.
Anyway, thank you guys for making a quality, dependable blog and, for the most part, putting up and promoting quality music despite what the mainstream demand is.

This site is the ONLY site I check for any new music/info on the artists I actually enjoy, and for the most part feel are making a difference in rap right now. Props to the both of you for inspiring my Tuesday purchases, as well as providing ill exclusives. Shit, this site is the reason I know about Cool Kids, Dyme Def, B.o.B, and countless others that I have grown to love as musicians. Thanks again and here’s to more goodness from the Dopeboyz to come. “you should never lose focus on your goals and dreams if you’re really passionate about it.” damn thats right. i’m in a difficult part of my life, because i finished school in march and there were too much days, where i didnt know what my life will be like. finally i found out that i love music more than anything else. it’s my appointment! that will be my future field of duty. i made an application to warner music and sony/bmg. so lets hope they see my talent and not only my grades, although they aren’t toooo bad^^
all in all: i have to thank you 2(dope) guys! your blog is my constantly attendant for such a long time.

Congratulations dudes, I swear I can’t tell how long I’ve been checking out this site…but for as long as I remember you’ve been keeping hip hop alive and I gotta say you guys are a huge contribution to what most people wish to live up to.
Keep up the good work, I check this site about 3 times a day, I even had to bookmark this website at one point ’cause I forgot the name of it…not meaning that in a bad way but yeah you guys are still in the bookmarks of my internet and you guys will forever be dope.
