With Hov & Jeezy opening up the show with a performance of As Real As It Gets the BET Awards were taped last night in Atlanta. The show isn’t airing until October 27th but the winners were announced, etc.
Jay later took home the MVP of the Year award, beating out such popular peers as Lil Wayne and Drake. Hov dedicated his win to Mr. Magic, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube. “Brooklyn, we did it again,” he said at the conclusion of his brief speech.
Other big winners announced during the show last night were Drake for Rookie of the Year and DJ AM for DJ of the Year.
Ice Cube was honored with the I Am Hip-Hop award, with an introductory video that included a voice-over from Dr. Dre. “From that first rhyme he spit for me, I knew Cube was a star,” Dre said. The award was presented to the former N.W.A member by Young Jeezy and Cube’s favorite MC, Chuck D.
For a more in depth breakdown of the show, hit up MTV. And to be honest, I don’t care who won what. All I wanna see/hear are the Cyphers that went down. DJ Premier on the 1s and 2s with KRS-One & Wale rocking the first cypher; Joe Budden & Nicki Minaj rocking the 2nd; and the most anticipated w/ Eminem, Black Thought & Mos Def.
cosign. All I wanna hear are they cyphers every year. BET seems to suck at knowing what good hip hop is and instead picks popular hip hop. 2dopeAwards???

What I don’t understand is this hip hop award shows and ceremonies and stuff being taped now and then shown way later. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel a different way when it’s LIVE. It’s like an event then…cuz it’s happening right then, even though its on TV. VH1 is doing that with the Hip Hop Honors and now BET with the Hip Hop Awards. In the internet age, that’s not a good thing, cuz there is going to be leaked footage and different stuff anyways and that takes away from the authenticity and excitement of the event.

It’s a courtesy thing I suppose. I can’t really speak on it all the way, but I didn’t really follow what DJ AM was on this year, except for the tragedies, but I have a good feeling that DJ AM did A LOT for hip hop this year…and not to mention that since he passes, it’s good timing to honor him for that, even if they compiled the means to do it from his lifetime achievement. It just makes a lot of sense. Plus, name a list of other DJs you think should have won it. I hope your criteria is not based on how many mixtapes they put out or something. DJ AM put artists on and helped them excel their career by giving them opportunities and cosigning their music. I’m not trying to start an argument, but I’d really just like to hear your sincere logic behind saying that he doesn’t deserve it. (I’m talking about DJ AM…we already know the Obama thing…lol)
