N.E.R.D. Adds (Female) Member for New Album

So it looks like Pharrell, Chad & Shae will be joined by Rhea (a Toronto native of Guyanese descent) on their fourth studio album, Instant Gratification, which is set to drop in 2010.

“Musically, we’re just somewhere else [with her],” Pharrell told MTV News. “The music is now very 3-D. It’s something you have to hear. But you’ll see. We’re definitely somewhere else. I want to leave that impact moment for when you purchase your download and you purchase your CD. The music is very three-dimensional. We’re just really excited. We feel like N.E.R.D. has always been the punks of hip-hop and the outcasts of alternative music — just a little different. But this time, we’re taking no prisoners.”

The Neptunes artist explained Rhea might be petite, at just 5-foot-4, but her booming voice and her classical background blend in with the genre-bending trio of N.E.R.D., also including Chad Williams and Shae.

“Now you have this little Tinkerbell that’s just stepped in and has been amazing,” he said. “It’s made it a fun process. We can go in so many more directions, because we have the vocal support.”

I really hope these guys don’t turn all BEP on us. But to be honest, I think this definitely has potential to be great. Here’s hoping for the best! And for a slight sneak peak on what to expect, hit the jump to check out footage of them performing 2 new joints in Miami Beach the other night.

  1. I’d just wanna see these guys make more songs like Provider.

  2. ^^ cosign bro, or maybe oldschool cuts like bobby james, that was a deep album.

  3. BEP was EXACTLY what came to mind when I read the title.

Although, BEP had a different female singer in it at one point before fergie and they made some good music…..let’s hope this girl isnt a fergie

  4. Don’t think they match the caliber of BEP as a group/band…

  5. ^^she’s not. she can definitely blow (vocals people.. vocals)

  6. RUH ROH! i hope this doesnt turn into a BEP situation!
    chick is fine though..

  7. yea provider was the shit. still bump that from time 2 time

  8. There has never been anything wrong with BEP. They just evolved to another form of music and level when the acquired Fergie. As usual, people who want artists to stay the same FOREVER hated on the idea, not to mention the fact that hip hop fans (purists mostly) feel that POP is a bad thing.

  9. meh.. well i dont like the music that the BEP’s have been putting out. so crucify me. lol

  10. BEP sucks…seriously? yall feel them cornballs? Ferige? ugh..talk about certified wigster

  11. @Mike Dreams

It’s the “I liked them before everybody else” or the “They were way better back in the day” syndrome. Look at any artist in the top 10 on the billboard charts and you can find a bunch of people on the internet that will tell how much better they were before they made it.

  12. ^^its not even that. some people just enjoyed what bep was doing back in the day. you cant deny they totally switched up their sound. and you cant crucify them for doing what they had to do to make it to the next level but people will still have opinions on the comparisons between their old stuff and the new material. its impossible to avoid.

  13. ^

I know it’s just hard to take it seriously because you hear the same shit about every popular artist. I think there are a certain percentage of people that don’t want to see artist be successful

  14. For fuck sake.

Flipsyde were the dopest commercial group i’d ever heard until they added their female member.

BEP went corny when they added a female member.

Why do they ALL feel the need to do this.

  15. the “hip hop purists want everything to stay the same” complaint is really getting old. It has NOTHING to do with pop bruh. there is/was good pop music, but realize, there’s also a thing called cornball. EVERYTHING new isn’t good, as everything old isn’t either. Some things are best with consistency and others are with change, that’s that, now stop with the bitching.

Anybody who has heard a pre fergie BEP release should know that she’s not a vital part of the group and they did better (and evolved perfectly fine) without her. Case closed

  16. But i’ll check this chick out. If she’s dope, I take it back.

  17. feel bad for that Teyana chick. deaded (somewhat)

  18. She’s hot and from T-Dot so win.

  19. Man it’s N*E*R*D, I FUCKS WIT IT!

To all the BEP references: even though they are much different from there behind the front days (I remember the “falling up” video like it was yesterday), they still are a platinum group that makes good music. Period.

As for N*E*R*D: I’ll be a fan regardless of what they do, but I am anxious to see what they will do with a female in the group. DocCosmos was right, some more Bobby James shit would sick!

  20. And the whole point is…it was better for THEM in the long run. I disagree with JL about the evolution idea. I think BEP was hot b4 Fergie and that music was good…but if they had of just continued to make that music and never evolved with the times, they would have faded as new styles came out. They’d be like a bunch of acts from the 90s who have disappeared completely or only have minimal cult followings from their original fans.

Sidebar: Props for Toronto really putting on this year! Drake, Melanie Fiona and now this chick! Canada Stand UP!

  21. JL = perfect example of someone who doesn’t want to see artist be successful

  22. N.E.R.D.’s different >>>>>>>>> Cudi’s Different

and ppl no matter how much u want to defend them, the BEP are sell-outs…the biggest i think ive ever seen in a Hip-Hop, which they clearly arent a part of anymore

  23. Womp, womp. That type of attitude is why a lot of rappers end up being in the “Assorted” section at a Cheapo.

  24. Or not even just rappers, but music acts in general.

  25. Keep it good NERD!

  26. but theyre doing their thug-thizzle and making catchy club songs. and i cant say i dont appreiciate a good song no matter what genre. they are what they are thou..

  27. id fuck the shit outta her

  28. She’s sexy as fux.

  29. O God…i just looked at the post from last year and she’s Superbad!! what!? and she sounds a lot like Cassie in that song with Kiss.. she’s nothing like Fergie

  30. @ ebo

If I fucked, I’d bust too damn fast probably LOL

  31. I’ll listen to Dilated Peoples chopped and screwed before I bump BEP

  32. UNRELATED but J. Cole’s Wiki says that he is gonna put out a mixtape called “The Next Up” before his debut CD…anybody have confirmation on this or is this just somebody putting false info on Wiki?

  33. I love nerd, and have always supported them throughout there career. NERD is one of those groups that I would just purchase a cd of at the store without even hearing a single. Pharrel and chad have been producing since back in the day when they worked for teddy riley. If they think they can expand there sound by adding old girl, then I trust that they know what they are doing.

  34. man no ones purchasing shit fo’reeealll u mean when we download our copy for free

  35. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=civ-S66G0MI&feature=related irrelevant but kinda scary

  36. the diffrent between BEP and N*E*R*D* is Money not the the female singer because thats what changed Will.IAm. becuase he runs the BEP Empire once he started getted them big bucks he never looked back and forgot his roots and the neptunes theyve been rich for a fuckin long ass time and still been makin dope music so the female member wont matter because pharrell and will.i.am write all there shit and produce it so yeh cant compare and yes BEPs last album is pure bullshit and is not even close to hip-hop and i think WIll deep down inside knows that still a fan but not that album

  37. I remember this girl she had that song Choreographer with Jadakiss come out like a year ago. Her voice reminds me a lot of Cassies.

  38. @ Teddy, thats the problem with the record industry. Good artists making positive music cant get enough sales. Then the teeny boppers go buy up all the soulja boy albums, then after a while every new artist sounds like soulja boy, and in this case bep :) , if you like it buy it.

  39. artists from T-Dot gettin on da map..Drizzy Drake Melanie Fiona JD Era

  40. BEP has been garbage since Fergie joined trying so hard to get on the radio with soft corny garbage music.
I’m not a big fan of NERD but I respect them as artists making original music.
    T-Dot!

  41. GUYANA!!!

  42. You CANNOT compare BEP to NERD. They make completely different music. Unless this makes them go softer, I don’t think it’ll make much of a difference. I’ll wait to judge the move until the album comes out.

Btw, BEP was corny BEFORE Fergie and they became super corny after Fergie. I’d rather hear New Edition featuring Soulja Boy & Webstar over “Percolator” before listening to ANY of their cds.

  43. B.E.P do suck. N.E.R.D are going in that direction, hopefully they drop more of their older/better songs.

  44. Did everyone forget that Kelis was basically in NERD when they 1st came out? Any female vocals they needed came from her.

I tried my best to like Kelis but I look back and realize that she was always ass…

This chick looks like she’s dope.

  45. [...] this on 2DBz! I remember meeting her a few years back at FLOW. This girl has been GRINDING down in NY for a [...]

  46. Damn if you lames actually heard her in concert with n.e.r.d you won’t be pulling out all this BEP noise… BEP =/= n.e.r.d, and furgie or fuglie whatever he name is =/= rhea. Even though “In Search Of” was a classic, Seeing Sounds was pretty dope also. If you wanna hear more “Provider” then put that noise on repeat… Shit when someone makes a song just like a pervious song people bitch, when they make a new sound people bitch…

  47. If you read the credits in the book of in search of and fly or die, RHea has already provided background vocals now shes just closer to the crowd when she sings… Also Fergie’s cd was good music… BEP evolved not soldout… PS Will.W.Am is still a beast on the boards with his hip hop… check common

  48. Everybody wants their own Melanie Fiona.

  49. @ mike dreams, they didnt need fergie to grow…at ALL. The entire creative force that moves the black eyed peas is in Will.I.Am’s production. Think about it, put any weaker production behind a song like let’s get retarded or my humps and what do you have? A very corny song with weak verses. NOW, put the creativity of Will.I.Am’s production behind it. and THEN you get a good song. Fergie could be replaced with any fmeale singer and the outcome would be the same, but take will.i.am out and there is no BEP. You obviously havent heard any pre-fergie BEP. They would have progressed at the same pace without her. She’s like an appendix and Will.I.Am is the heart. Which one is needed to function? yea…

and @ darryle….really? What’s your definition of “success”? Is it money? because a lot of the richest people are miserable. Success is in being true to one’s self and ideals. So maybe they did reach success, but how am I an example of not wanting an artist to be successful by saying Fergie was a useless addition? If 15 more minutes in the limelight is your idea of success, you really miss the point of art as a whole.

I swear. Nigga’s hate anyone who have different opinions than them an call THAT person the one who’s keeping hip hop from moving forward. Yea…right.
