To reiterate what P’cola said, Pain will ALWAYS have a hit.
It’s not just the USE of auto-tune but how well you incorporate it into your music. Listen to a lot of the other artist using AT, they emphasize the SH*T out of it, but Pain balances it nicely with his voice and doesn’t constantly use it. You can clearly hear when he’s using it or not.

T-Pain will come to regret this retreat from Auto-Tune. Here in “Take Your Shirt Off” it makes only a few cameo appearances to punctuate the end of a few lines, and the short verse about 2/3 of the way through. Meanwhile, Auto-Tune is no where to be found on the recently leaked “Dope”. To be sure, this isn’t the subtle and artistic use of Auto-Tune that we’ve come to expect from T-Pain. As I’ve written elsewhere, T-Pain is taking a high stakes gamble, and I fear mainstream success without Auto-Tune simply isn’t in the cards.
