Hip Hop, VideoDrake was supposed to pass through my show last Friday, but he canceled at the last minute due to a studio session that was running late……..with Rihanna.
I hooked up with him the following day, instead of doing the usual studio interview, we hit Hyde Park, which is London’s equivalent of Central Park.
Drake breaks down:
*The Rihanna situation.
*Working with Kanye West
*Working with Chase & Status
*The forth-coming album and releasing it independently.…..and more.

Homebody is hitting it. He just likes denying it.
Yep he hitting it.
I like how Drake does his interviews never too cocky real humble. I just wanna know how he will be with success. Remember how Kanye was then now look at how he is. I just hope he always has a humble feel and not like a jerk. We all love Ye’s music but him as a person is different.
seems like a cool dude. but heavily overrated!
I honestly can’t find a reason to not like Drake as an artist or person. His music is very good, his personality is likeable, and he seems to have a good head on his shoulders.
its crazy seeing him climb up so high on the ladder of success. he’s gone from wheelchair jimmy with the jacked up fro on degrassi to here so fast.
Steve, I cosign that. A lot of people who can’t get with it are just trying too hard to find something wrong with the guy.
But I thought that was really interesting…what he said about releasing an album independently. Now, I mean, from a business standpoint, some might say that’s a horrible idea…but I thought it would be dope if he was to do really well doing it that way, because it’s definitely possible in my opinion. His buzz is already unbelievably nuts! It’s proven by the shows he’s sold out and what not.
Most people buy music online now, and he can easily get it on iTunes and any other distrubition site through an indie artist program…real simple. The customers wouldn’t give a care if it was put on there by a label or just by his team, they would buy the music.
The already always talk about Drake on 106 and he hasn’t even made an appearance, so I’m sure his new video “Best I Ever Had” when it comes out will have no problem getting on there or even MTV for that matter, and will probably do very well, just like the song itself has (and note that he’s done this without a major label this far too).
PLUS, he’s working on that tour, which will be super high profile if it comes through…and think of all the money going directly to him and his team that he makes versus a label and what not.
I think it sounds real good to me and it would definitely prove a great point about independent artists creating a buzz for themselves with the internet. I see it being very plausible and he should consider it. He definitely seems like an entity within himself that doesn’t really join labels or teams, but therefore spawns and creates his own, which OVO and ATF are already.
If he does go the independent route he would have the most mainstream independent album of all time with features from Jay-Z, Kanye and Wayne. I don’t care how he puts it out. I just know that I will be purchasing it. It’s dope to see an artist that seems to actually appreciate the love that he’s receiving from everyone, and doesn’t act as if that love should be given to him without cause. Wheelchair Jimmy FTW.
Question.
I heard major labels give an artist 99 cents per album sold, being that the major labels pay for promotion and all that.
While indie artists can get 6 dollars to 15 dollars an album sold
because it’s up to the artists to promote themselves.
Is that true, can anyone clarify? Cuz if so, with all the hype Drake has he COULD sell 100,000 first week on an independent…
and that’ll be at LEAST half a milli he’ll earn.
I’ve never heard of an artist getting more than Master P’s first Koch deal, which was like $8 an album. I could be wrong because I don’t follow that stuff THAT closely, but that’s the biggest figure that I’ve ever heard of. I thought that Sheek Louch ended up getting a very similar deal when he signed with Koch as well.
$8 PER ALBUM SOLD I should say
@ Steve_Rollin
Well sheeeiit, independent should be the way to go for these artists, especially the new ones.
Yeah if an artist can build a big enough buzz via the internet I see no reason why they would need a major label backing. You see it a lot in other genres of music (especially rock) where bands sell tons of albums on little indie labels and then eventually get scooped by a major for the sole purpose of the label backing their huge tours financially. Hell Gym Class Heroes are on a label called Decaydence and they saw HUGE success the past 2 years.
You know why everyone likes Drake as an artist, and as a person??
Because he’s mu fuckin CANADIAN!!!!
Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. He would make so much money per CD versus on the label…and if he links up with that tour with Jay and them, and just simply gets a sponsor, he’s straight with it. He’s already doing this “SO FAR GONE” tour with no label backing.
I say he should do it. I bet he at least goes gold in a week. I mean, real talk, earlier last week, someone was selling a fake, bootleg Drake album called “The Girls Love Drake” on iTunes with all the free music that he had dropped and some lame cover art. In no time, Best I Ever Had was like #4 on the iTunes charts and people were buying it and saying like “YES! Drake’s finally on iTunes, not even paying attention to the fact it was a fake album.
The only argument might be how he could lock in the overseas crowd. IDK how well he has a following in other parts of the world, but in Canada and America, he’s one of the number 1 artists’ to watch right now.

reps canada so well.
TORONTO WE GO HARD!!!!
If anyone is cable of doing 1M or more independent now-a-days it’s got to be Drake.
I mean I’m on the eastcoast and his shit is bumped heavy out here and numerous friends and place down south play his shit. I haven’t gotten any feedback from the west but I’m sure they do too ie. 2DopeBoyz.com
I mean a yr ago he was relatively underground and only known by dedicated fans a yr later he’s played all over the country.
O I forgot lastly. Artists don’t get .99 for album sold.
Now that can be the scenario for some artist and has happen.
Basically what I’m trying to say the music industry is an open field for contract negotiation but not normally flexible to unsigned artists with no album and/or any mainstream released projects.
Depending on the buzz of the artist (newcomer) or stature of the artists (normally been around the block w/ a different label) or the artists may have both, the contract offers differ.
Industry standard they give you a number of album deals. The outcome of the 1st one will depend on how much the contract will play out for all the albums you signed to released under them.
Then your budget (loan) to create the product/promo comes in to play which is $250K max for unproven artists. Proven artists get that budget of $250k or more, some at times can get less than $250k Keep in mind the budget money is all money you’re gonna owe the label. So when artist say they say that signed a deal for $1.5M they also should say how much of the $1.5 is for the budget and how much of it is earned money (normally the bonus $ that’s theirs under the contract agreement).
They divide all the other ways of getting money. Like the $ to every album sold. Some artist like Jim Jones claimed to get $8 to every album sold. Some other artists claimed to get more per album sold. Nowadays there are more artist who get the same or a bit more but it’s very rare. Some people are lucky if they get $3 to every album sold.
The negotiate how much percentage of your publishing you get, the money from touring (main way to get their $) after the album drops and lastly more recently they try to negotiate a % from ya ringtones since before it blew up like it did say 5 yrs ago record labels didn’t have that in the contract for the artists. Some of these artists pocketed and recouped the budget $ (loan) they owe the label and some added to the album sales and tour money. —I could be missing some things but I believe most of this stuff is on point.
first night the album drops ill be putting in my part to make it go platinum in a week
drake is the truth
the future!!
