The first leak off The Empire’s The Drought is Over: Friends With Money mixtape. Shouts to Karen Civil on the leakage (and Derrick for the early heads up yesterday). UPDATE: Figured I’d bring this up to the top as Drake just wrote some interesting shit about it on OctVeryOwn…
This is a reference track that I did for Wayne. It was gonna be on Dedication 3. Needless to say it never made the mixtape but now you understand the point of view that I was writing from.

Lmao @ People Not Knowing What A Reference Track Is
shake maybe you should explain this to people….idiots
interesting…
@ xastey
because dude has alot to prove to the world when it comes to his talents, it’s better if to know him as a rapper/singer than a rapper trying to make a transition into singing.
On top of that, dude is dope as fuck wit it.
damn… referencing for wayne :S
… thats pretty sad, now we know for shure that wayne has writers… he even admitted to his artist “shanell” writing for him.. she wrote ‘prom queen’
Since when do niggaz record reference tracks for mixtapes, lol.

eh.. thats sense not since
@at cheezyDoDo yeah but wayne is not a singer he is a rapper he needs to write his own shit and not bite or have other people write his stuff and no i am not talkin about the reference track cuz i can understand that
people are going to defend wayne on this? ya’ll suck suckas!…
it’s cool. i’m not mad at wayne. we already knew. it’s just nice to have the proof. but yall dudes get the proof and act like it’s not there
Wow…idk. Cuz drakes said NUMEROUS times he doesnt write for wayne, maybe wayne needed to know how the melody was so he could be on key or something.
idk. This is still a shock, and prom queen he will get a pass for in my book, its a damn rock song with NO punchlines, of course wayne didnt write it..
you expected drake to come out in interviews when he’s on young money and say “i write for wayne”?
how simple minded are you?
And He Even Hints At It Without It Sounding Like He Does…”I Give Him Ideas Sometimes”
See I said this earlier today and people attacked me like I was starting something. I was just honestly asking a question because Drake was saying some Blood lines in there and we know he’s not Blood. So the obvious 1st thought is; is this a track he did to collab with Lil’ Wayne.
“We bounce ideas off each other.”
I think all songs wayne sings on he gets help from. Not saying they write it for him, but they show him how to do it. Hes not on ym.
Oh and by the way the word “reference” means just that. If you have idea for a track to do with an artist you record the idea so the artist can hear it and if he/she likes the idea and wants to do the track with you they’ll then get together and create the track adding or taking off things to make the song complete.
It’s industry standard. It’s creating a song with an artist. That’s how Busta Rhymes did when he had Mariah Carey sing on “Give It To Me” he sent her the reference track and she thought that he should keep his vocals on the hook and she’ll do the hook too etc.
if he needs to know how to sing a song he wrote. he has a problem.
reference can be used in multiple different ways. yeah it can be used like the above poster or something else
Well we know drake wrote it…hes confirmed that. Im just wondering which reference track this is…a RnB type were Drakes just showing the melody and keys, or a Dr.Dre type, which is considered ghostwriting. Which wouldnt make since…Wayne and Drake both wrote on detox word to ransom.
Lmao at people confused and not wanting to believe the “best rapper alive” has a ghostwriter…it was gilly….then currensy…now drake and we he get rid of drake it will be someone new. Fuck whatchu heard and man up! Quit accepting tight bright gay ass clothes, quit accepting purses as duffle bags and quit accepting karoke as real hip-hop god damn it….I feel like i’m on a episode of the boondocks.
Currensy aint write for wayne..lol.
Gilly probraly didnt either, did he ever show actually proof? Dont you think Juve/BG/Turk would have backed that up while they had beef.
Leave a mans personal style out of his rapping abilities. Thats homo judging a rapper on how he dresses.
No whats homo is to be brainwashed to go with it. Kanye dress like a fuckin queer as well…but he makes incredible music. Just cause it’s popular don’t mean its right. The world changed exactly into that fucking boondocks episode i swear and they was trying to put cats up on game, but you a got defensive statement for that too right, one that makes everything ok and right in “wayne’s world”. I Aain’t got no problem with dukes music, really I don’t. But people, Open Your Eyes…please. This shit aint hip-hop, I give you a damn what you say. Mutha fuckas will do whatever to impress pussy…even dress n act like it. Homos.
Stop hating On drake Man.

“Instead of listening to the same old shit.
Try something New.”
Something new? Like Drake impersonating:
a fake southern accent
kanye west (rapping)
kanye west (singing)
trey singing
Yeah.. real original drake..
How about you come out with one thing: personality?
ps: lil wayne is not a ghost writer. he cant even write. or spell.
“Something new? Like Drake impersonating:
-A fake southern accent
-Kanye west (rapping)
-Kanye west (singing)
-Trey singing
Yeah.. real original drake..
How about you come out with one thing: personality?”
LoL.Ouch.Very true tho,he has some talent but he’s not really innovative or doin anything new really.Just a mash up of Wayne and Trey Songz. And people are in a need for new music. All the co-signs he’s got nowadayz just push fans over the edge.See somebody else believe….they wanna follow
You listen to Drake and think Kanye?? Really??? Most people who have a problem with Drake say that and that normally means they don’t like him and don’t want to like him because a lot of other people like him. Which is cool because no one likes to be a bandwagon jumper.
Nevertheless, the truth still is the truth. Drake and Kanye are nothing a like as far as their style of lyrics and flow.
For one when he came out with his 1st two mixtapes he was singing on both of ‘em. Not only that he would combine both singing and rapping in a verse and the same for when he did hooks. 808’s and Heartbreaks came out last yr; those 2 Drake mixtapes came out in ‘06 and the other in ‘07.
The only 2 things that are similar is that they don’t rap or portray the common norm of being a gangsta or street dude and they talk about clothing frequently. I don’t attribute them both being retrospective & introspective as a similarity because then that would mean all rappers are similar to each other in style because they simply rap.
Rapping is mainly a retrospective & introspective sport which is why the word “real” is often tossed around in hip-hop music. Regular rappers tend to not be as famous in rapping. Most popular rappers have a dramatic street life displayed in their music. The ones who are cool with being regular and just from the hood or live the hiphop lifestyle normally aren’t mainstream or are underground. People saying he got a southern accent… really?? I mean when I hear most souther rappers I don’t think their diction is similar.
Young Jeezy, Young Buck, T.I., Bun B, Keke, Pall Wall Slim Thug, Ludacris, Rich Boy, David Banner or Webbie; you mean to tell me out of all the rappers from that list (which is wide range of different southern places and accents) list that Drake’s diction/pronunciation sounds like theirs? Hmmm not to me. The only far assessment is Trey Songz and if you look at when Drake was in his early stages he linked up with Trey and became good friends and did a lot freestyles and tracks together. Drake sang and obviously Trey Songz is a polished phenomenal (though underrated) singer. Why wouldn’t he want to learn or take tips on how to harmonize, sing and create catchy melodies etc.
Now the comparisons to Trey I agree with and are fair by anyone to say that. However, I see nothing wrong in learning unless it’s not copying and biting and I honestly don’t think he’s copying or biting Trey Songz or any of those other people try to say.
^^^^
I’m sorry I have to explain why my opinion was so long and detailed. I only typed this(the above comment) because I wish people could embrace all the good artist even the ones that’s not “your cup of tea” per say but you know they’re good mc’s.
I say that because there is so much garbage being played and accepted in the mainstream world on the radio, t.v. and to the overall public that I’m willing to listening to artists who are good yet “not my cup of tea” over sooo many artists who are seeing all the benefits that good artist should see.
Some good artists don’t peak creatively as fast but I’d rather listen to Kid Cudi (not my cup of tea), Ya Boy, Asher Roth (not my cup of tea), Nipsey Hussle, Mickey Factz, Fashawn, Wale, Drake, Royce da 5′9, Crooked I and many others over a Gucci Mane, OJ da Juiceman, Shawty Lo, Soulja Boy, and other good artist who aren’t consistent or good.
So I open my ear to artist who have hip-hop integrity 9 times out of 10 whether their my fav artists or not.
^^^you put it well showman…the same people saying “i dont see what’s so special about him” are getting caught up in the hype…if they’d just listen to him instead of trying to hear the best shit in the world (cause they know they wont) and stop being so eager to tell drake fans “he’s not that good”…they’d actually like him…oh well….i dont really see a fake southern accent = /…cause he always had a slight southern accent since he came out with his 1st tape “Room For Improvement” in 05…and that can be accredited to him living in memphis…when your delivery gets better…you can expect to emphasize different sounds in different words…which is where he is now…this is what is killing hip hop…people being so eager to throw people under the bus cause they have a large fan base and getting attention that you all think your fav. rappers should be getting…just listen to the music and take it for what it is

so singing “well” is corny?
wtf!?
Shake said this on May 8th, 2009 at 11:36 am
having an education is never corny
LMAO. .AFTER SNOWMAN I GUESS THE HATERS GAVE UP????
I’m so tired of the argument of what’s REAL and FAKE hip hop.
Now that Wayne has changed the game, and most of everybody other favorite rappers can’t get any play. They hate him. Embrace change and tell your favorite rapper its 2009 not 1998. The haters want to DISCREDIT Wayne for ANY and EVERYTHING. Anyone who has been in the presence of making good music or recording a song would know that ideas are bounced around constantly and that inspiration come from each other. Kid Cudi has did “reference” tracks for both Kanye and Jay-z, is he writing for them? When you take someone under your wing in a creative process you feed off each other. SO STOP HATING DAMN!! If you don’t like the person in general, then don’t say shit. Because even if he wrote the greatest song ever, you’ll STILL have something negative to say.
Some of y’all need to start your own blogs with all these long drawn out responses.
Cudi’s done reference tracks for kanye and jay-z?
Wow, what songs?
I know the climate has changed and whether it’s good or bad, reference tracks just aren’t very hip-hop, IMO. The whole point of hip-hop (the rapping aspect of it) is to express your thoughts and creativity through your own words, right? If someone else is writing your raps for you I don’t really understand what hip-hop needs you for cuz anyone can fucking rap. &, yes, I understand that isn’t necessarily what a reference track is but really anyone that can rhyme & write good lyrics doesn’t need nothin’ but a drum beat in his head at the appropriate tempo.
^^^
Your absolutely correct. It can be that simple but generally the music will sound just like that; Simple. That’s a regular method that makes some songs sound the same. The whole “…you write 16, I’ll write 16 and I’ll do the hook” sometimes makes music (especially these days) plain & too cliche.
Rappers should want to develop several different formats & styles to display their talents/music to standout creatively. If anything that’s what’s lacking in hip-hop right now diverse flows (of course w/ good lyrics) on unexpected formats.
Drake is my baby’s DADDY!!!! I love him! I wanna do sooooooooo many things to him!
