New Year, Same Old Police Brutality… (Video)

This is just a painful reminder that even in a worsening economy where jobs are dropping out from under people left and right, we all still have to be wary of our footsteps in the dark. I’ve always considered my birthday to be a personal victory against the stigma of Black men landing either in jail or prison before they turn 25, but Oscar Grant unfortunately will never be able to revel in this himself anymore. Sad, really.

  1. damn. i live in the city and i was watching the reaction in oakland and people were destroying property of innocent people which is like slapping the brother of joe buddens friend which really doesnt do anything but create more victims there are so many more ways to protest, have we learned nothing? im all for going to the streets but we shouldn’t only protest when a cop shoots a man for no reason, we should protest when anybody gets killed for no reason, why don’t we see people marching then? they’re saying the cop thought it was his tazer……..what kind of tazer has a trigger like a gun and looks like a gun and feels like a gun? thats bs but lighting cars on fire and breaking windows?? c’mon now

  2. OMFG, dude .. no words.

  3. Rest In Peace Oscar Grant…..And Oh Yeah Fuck The Police

  4. so wait a second… that mutherfucka just shot him in the back like that??? wat has this world come 2…. i really dont kno wut 2 say…

  6. I didn’t know about this…but, now that I do, I’m really heated…you might see me on the news

  7. I’ve heard now, that the spin they are going to try to push through is that he mistook his gun for his taser. I am speechless at this point. Just goes to show, doesn’t matter who wins elections, we’re pretty much out here fending for ourselves against the blue monster….

  8. Thank you for coming thru with this post

  9. He had his taser out before the gun…so, it’s no excuse.

  10. Reports out of Arizona of another case of an unarmed minority getting shot…

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/01/08/baseballer.shot/index.html

  11. I couldn’t believe it when I saw this on the news a couple days ago…

    http://www.potholesinmyblog.com/blog

  12. It’s a shame when the only way I hear about injustice like this is via a hip hop blog. I just saw this a couple hours ago @ another blog I never visit.

It’s 8 days into the new year and that’s how long it took me to catch this?!!??

I watch local news and even a little bit of CNN. SMH @ the world news for not really covering this or whats going on in Oakland.

  13. this entire ordeal is utterly disgusting, but completely unsurprising. i was speechless when i first saw the video clip a few days ago.

  14. But of course CNN covers the riots….

  15. i didnt hear about this until today. what.the.fuck.

    im upset. this is disgusting.

  16. Wow this is really bad. Not reactions from the officers either.

  17. this is actually my fault for not posting anything about this when i heard about it a few days ago. better later than never i suppose.

  18. Jesus man, I didnt even realize they shot the guy until I watched it again. What’s the fuck it that? In the position that he was in, he wasn’t even a threat to anyone. Y’all better watch out, if they’re willing to shoot that guy with dozens of onlookers, what WON’T they do?

  19. I am watching the riots…and I realized…these people are retards.

You can scream “fuck the police” all you want. However, when your bike gets stolen…your’re calling the police. When your house gets robbed…your’re calling the police.

This isolated incident was, in fact, disgusting. Very true. However, the majority of policemen and women are law abiding citizens.

  20. Sean Bell – over 50 shotsfired/unarmed, the night before his wedding

Kathryn Johnston, an 92-year-old Atlanta woman, was shot 6 times and killed by police officers who had entered her home with a fraudulently-obtained no knock warrant

Abner Louima – sodomized by police in a precinct

Amadou Diallo -was shot and killed by New York City police officers while unarmed after the officers claimed they believed he was reaching for a gun. He had a wallet in his hand.. 41 shots later he was gone

Timothy Stansbury, a 19-year old New York City teenager, was shot and killed by New York City Police Department

  21. so don’t say isolate homeboy….

  22. Too bad you never see the “good” cops on youtube huh?
This world is goin to hell real quick (metaphorically speaking).
This fuck will get off to which I think disgusts me the most.

  23. Dvargas -

    Those are 5 incidents.

WHAT ABOUT THE COUNTLESS TIMES POLICE HAVE HELPED PEOPLE OUT?

    Drove people to the hospital?

    Caught the criminal.

Found the one who shot your friend/brother/lover.

These events are isolated. It is almost a small percentile.

Please do not come in here and make an ass out of yourself.

  24. you’re defending cops, in the comments field of a video showing COPS shooting an unarmed man in the back…

    i’m the ass…

so by your theory, if i help out lets say 50 people next month, if i kill a man in March, all is forgiven…

  25. here brush up on your police brutality…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cases_of_police_brutality

  26. oh iiiii forgot….

Alexandros Grigoropoulos a 15-year-old student, was mortally shot by a policeman.

In Greece that sparked about 2 weeks of riots…

All I’m saying not only is this not isolated, its not even isolated to the US

    Police are brutal fucks worldwide….

  27. It’s all fucked up none the less.

  28. Meka, your intro is confusing.

Don’t get me wrong, the whole situation is wrong, excessive, & unnacceptable. The officer involved must be held accountable.

That said, Oscar Grant had already been to in and out of jail, and already been to prison even though he was only 22. And he must have done something to be face down and cuffed in the first place. Dude chose to be in that situation. He wasn’t just walking down the street, minding his own business.

Please don’t waste time by telling me I condone this situation, because I don’t. I’m just sayin…

  29. This world is going crazy !

  30. You are acting as if I have no idea what police brutality is. I live in New York City.

Second, you are judging the police as a whole. Not the individual person. I do not know if you notice, the alleged murderer RESIGNED. The entire police department did not cease to exist. Stop judging POLICE as a whole and start judging the person.

The cases that you just listed…on Wikipedia, the most credible of all sources, number about 60. On hand, cops do more good deeds than they do bad ones.

It goes the same for classifying races. If one African American is bad, does that mean the entire race is? No. That one malignant person is. The PERSON that shot Oscar is wrong. Not the police force.

  31. that was fucked up. that being said, Novel is dope.

  32. Just shut the fuck up..goddamn

  33. but the police forces that continuously cover up and and get cases thrown out for police brutalities are upstanding citizens right….

I live in NYC, I grew up in the Bronx,I live in Spanish Harlem.

And I’ll tell you this, the police see us minorities as one big enemy, they help out when they are called BECAUSE ITS THEIR FUCKING JOB. So the same way they view me and anyone that looks like as a threat, I view anyone with a badge the same fucking way.

  34. If your going to do something right, protest the way MLK Jr. would had done. Not by destroying property, its time that we started to be smart about how we conduct protest and practice our rights.

  35. “And I’ll tell you this, the police see us minorities as one big enemy, they help out when they are called BECAUSE ITS THEIR FUCKING JOB. So the same way they view me and anyone that looks like as a threat, I view anyone with a badge the same fucking way.”

You my friend, are an ignorant idiot.

Since we are throwing generalizations out, I view anyone with Dredlocks as a pothead.

Any African American person is loud, ignorant (or ignant), and improper.

Do not start spewing this, this…non factual nonsense. NYC Police force is one of the most racially diverse in the world. You are going to tell me, that my best friend of 10 years, who is a cop and is Haitian, views me as an enemy?

    Hilarious.

    And what John said…was right.

  36. I have been thinking about this since I heard about it several days ago. As someone who has lived in Oakland for the last eight years, I can tell you that folks are pissed off – and rightfully so. What is real fucked up is that the city has not arrested dude or tried to question him or anything. This shit took place a week ago and nothing has happened. You know the city and police are all silent now as they work on their made up ass story to try to get this fool off.

Of corse the big news out here are the riots. I’m all for the protests, but this shit was just a bunch of young kids who wanted to fuck up shit. They destroyed many local Black owned businesses which is just wrong as well (not as bad as killing an unarmed, innocent victim). Taking your frustration out on other Black folks and people who support the cause is not the way to do it. But these things have to be contextualized. The Black and Brown folks of Oakland have been shitted on for years. The city is really taking a hit with the problems with the economy. Poor schools, housing, and increased crime, have left many people frustrated in Oakland, and these events provided an outlet for that. But let’s address the problem, which is a society that doesn’t value Black people and not just destroy shit just to do it.

    R.I.P. Oscar

  37. thats some bullshit. this shit is sickening. yall hear bout that teenager getting shot on his own property after him and a friend or brother or whoever went out to get a burger then came home and cops showed up assuming they stole the car??? this world is getting worse everyday. it’ll be a matter of time b4 God decides to come back and take the good people to heaven then destroy this planet for good. mistaken his gun for his tazer my ass. why the other cops aint stop him??? judge that cop and not the whole force my ass. get the fuck outta here wit that bullshit.

  38. I live in the bay area and i saw the tragic incident on the news the following night it happened. Yeah, i haven’t ridden on the Bart since this incident; that’s police brutality at its finest. The problem was that the officer did not have to shoot the victim that was already concealed facing down on the ground. That’s highly unacceptable and that officer should be striped of his badged and trialed for first degree murder. And as for the mayor he’s done next anything since this has happened, which stirred up the protest/ riots last night. This is bullshit at its finest.

  39. [That said, Oscar Grant had already been to in and out of jail, and already been to prison even though he was only 22. And he must have done something to be face down and cuffed in the first place. Dude chose to be in that situation. He wasn’t just walking down the street, minding his own business.]

wow… just asking here, but was the cop aware of his criminal past when he shot him?

and, if you have a criminal past, are you more at risk?

  40. actually the tasers cops..don’t know about gay ass bart police… carry are shaped like guns and do have a trigger..that said that doesn’t excuse his ignorance and it’s a fucked up situation.

  41. If they know about your criminal past…They put a large spin on the incident. If the police already ran his id…than it would have been clear that he had a criminal past.

  42. BART police are different than the regular PD..they’re more like mall security..so im 99% sure they didn’t run this doods name or have any information on him

  43. BUT i agree with you jacques its stupid to say FUCK THE POLICE when it’s the person that’s to blame

  44. i’m at a loss for words…

we see a man getting shot in the back, and we dig up his criminal past, have words in defense of police officers

i grew up in an area where you were more likely to be harrased and abused by a cop rather than helped, i have been at the other end of a cop’s gun who got a call about two latinos running around with a gun, unfortunately they generelized and picked my and my freends latino ass..

so i’ll stick to my point, that they generalize us, profile us, and act on these biases and generalizations… not all the time, but guess what ONE time is enough to ruin my trust…

they act on their generalizations, all i have is my words.. so guess what FUCK THE POLICE

  45. dvargas77
    no

The intro to this post implied Oscar Grant won’t know what it’s like to break the stigma of being a black man reaching 25 years old without going to jail or prison first now that he’s been killed. I was just saying he already had. Regardless of that fact, this whole situation is tragic. I understand the need to protest against this situation, but rioting and destroying cars and businesses of innocent people is NOT the way to go about it.

  46. Like I said, shut the fuck up…and none of this shit would be said. Sittin’ here talkin’ bout it ain’t doin’ nothin’ but makin’ matters worse for ya’ll corrupted ass minds

  47. gotcha just sayin

to quote Rage Against the Machine “Let the riot be the rhyme of the unheard…”

now rioting and destroying your own people’s property doesn’t make much sense… take the fight to the people who did you wrong

  48. They didn’t run his name at all, they just concealed him for what ever reason. They run names through their car’s. As for saying “fuck the police”, i as well agree simply b/c at the end of the day police officers protect and server. And at sometime the ppl that were rioting will need them. But their was no need for rioting, like setting ppl’s “cars on fire.”

  49. it dosent matter how much good the police do, or what kinda of record the victim had. Shit like this SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN even once. Its not in their fuckin hand book, it aint part of their job description.

The logic that the police help people everyday so that excuses them when they murder un-armed individuals or that a person has committed crimes in the past so that justifies their unlawful executions is flawed in so many ways.

  50. i was feeling real alone for a second there

    thank you rukka

  51. wait how do you mean that?

  52. I SEEN THIS SHIT ON THE NEWS & IT HAD ME SO STEAMED..HOW DO U KILL A MAN THATS HANDCUFF’D…HE PULLED HIS GUN SO EASILY NOT EVEN GIVIN A FUCK ABOUT THAT MANS LIFE

  53. Thats why im an anarchist…fuck the government…fuck Obama,Fuck McCain, Fuck Bush, Fuck The Police and fuck soulja boy

  54. Josh Paul last time i checked everyone, according to the law which the police abide by, is innocent until proven guilty. Last time i checked the police didnt have the authority to override due process and get right to sentencing. He has a record yes, thats completely irrelevant to the situation. What crime did he commit that warranted what he received that night….acting up is a death sentence??? Shit, by your reasoning any rowdy high kid who acts like grant an em too should never step outside cuase theyre basically dead men walking.

  55. ^^^

i think Josh Paul is high right now and dont know what the fuck he talkin bout lol

  56. Police have a reasonable amount of force model to go by. Depending on the suspects actions and response that determines how you go about interacting with them. Seeing as how the victim was on the ground, and posing no threat, the officer had no justification for drawing his weapon, let alone discharging it.
MLK’s way of protesting did not work, and Malcolm X knew this and we as a people now need to respond.
The job of a police officer is a privileged, TO PROTECT AND SERVE. The system as a whole needs to be revamped, because those put in place have let human error become an excuse far too often. The American people need to defend themselves from those whom are supposed to be protecting them.
I too have family members who are police officers, and I make them accountable. Fuck The police. They have to come out and speak against themselves as well. Make them responsible for their actions. If they are simply going to shoot with disregard for the rules put in place, then maybe Marshall Law should be put in effect. The Revolution will not be televised, but the acts leading up to it will be.

  57. The Revolution will not be televised, but the acts leading up to it will be…..

    SPEECH!!!!

  58. all I wanna say…..

motherfuckers need to watch who the hell they let into a police force…..

“accidents” like this…are not supposed to happen at all…police brutality be dammed.

shit…the officer at least did the somewhat partial right thing and resigned….he aught to be brought to court for his complete and utter ineptitude on how to handle a gun though.

now not only do I have to be careful walking at night…I gotta worry now if the police is even up to task to do their jobs?!?!?

    WTF!?!?

  59. I dont know much about the situation because im from Europe but I dont understand how you guys are arguing about the protesting being any good or not. Like you said in Greece they protested for 2weeks and thats how it should be. Not to make a riot but to let (those few) cops know that it has serious consequences and think twice about grabbing a taser(which sound like a ridicelous excuus but when you look at the officer’s face and reaction it might be true). Anyway, let them know that its wrong and they should do something about it

  60. Rucka….

The logic that most African Americans are nice excuses us when a select few objectify women and run gangs and what not.

    Your excuse is flawed.

  61. San Francisco- Demonstration Against Police Murder of Oscar Grant

AnnouncementsTonight’s events in Oakland made it clear to everyone that police murders will not go without reprisal. The burning cars and smashed windows of the evening’s conflict showed that the people of the Bay Area will not forget Oscar. The kids know what’s up. We are not interested in passive, impotent and utterly ineffectual displays of disapproval. The Mayor’s calls for calm fell upon deaf ears. We will not remain calm when a young father has been executed by the police, because to them, a passive youth is an easy target. We will not lie down and be shot in the back.

Today we heard the news that Officer Johannes Mehserle resigned from the police force. This is no consolation.

The problem is bigger than Oakland. The relationship between officer and civilian is perverse: an unelected authority enacting an unencumbered power of life and death over a population.

Last month, San Francisco saw a confrontational solidarity action against the murder of a young man on the other side of the world, yet there has been no response to the murder of a young man on the other side of the bay.

On Monday, January 12 at 5pm meet at the Civic Center BART station for a demonstration against the police murder of Oscar Grant.

The young people of Oakland have refused to take this lightly. Let’s show them that they are not alone.

  62. I don’t know what I hate more, the fact that the incident occured or the fact that an enforcer of the law can commit the highest offense, walk away from the job, and not be questioned and reject possible law suits. I’m a Hayward resident who lived in Oakland for most of my years, and I am just ashamed. I was 3 miles away when this happened. I have the same questions as every one else, such as how the hell you can confuse a gun handle for a taser handle, but is nothing going to happen about it? If I, being a minority, went up to a cop and shot him in the back, I would be restrained, beaten, taken to court immediately, and most murdered on the spot. But someone who enforces the law, a system which is meant to bring justice to society (as we have seen over the last few hundreds of years, it didn’t) allows a person who is hired to help save lives and to make communities better can commit manslaugher (with video evidence) and doesn’t have to answer to anyone? America, what kind of democracy are we becomming? We claim to be anti-communism, but we are becoming a police state no worse than North Korea (I’m not saying it’s a bad place). Is the government supporting police brutality or against it? There have been many cases on this so far, yet nothing? And what hits me most is that I have been brutally treated by police officers as a child in Oakland. At 10, I was put against a wall for the suspicion of having drugs when I was just walking to my apartment on the way home while reading a book. And this happened SEVERAL tiles. If this country is for the people, if America is really for freedom and really cares about the welfare of it’s majorities and minorities, will it do something?

And I expect Barack Obama to speak about this incident. As a role model to minorities and majorities alike, I would feel hurt in the inside if he completely ignores this issue. Rest in peace, brother Oscar.

  63. jacques, the fact that most of us are nice is no excuse for running a gang or objectifying women. read it that way.

i was saying that logic flawed when used as an excuse for inexcusable behavior

  64. You run a gang for the same reasons you run a familly, out of love. Of course, there are some stupid things that happen in gangs, such as shooting other people or fighting over silly shit. But really, gangs are groups where people form the same background can come together and just chill with each other. Of course there are different types of gangs as well, such as drug gangs. I don’t really have a straight opinion on these, since there are some qualities I agree with and some I disagree with. Gangs are just groups of people who are from the streets. And associating every gang with bad behavior is called a generalization.

I do agree that objectifying women is a little wrong, but I don’t spit (not literally) on those who do.

  65. I’m baffled.

Its amazing to me how so many people on here are reaching for ANY reason to justify what happened to Oscar Grant. Real talk, there is none. He had a prior criminal record…..so? He may or may not have been involved in a dumb ass fight on the train….again, so? NONE of that justifies him getting shot in the back while on the ground with a cops knee already in his back. Where was he going? Where was the threat that justified deadly force? C’mon man, be honest…the shit was wrong. I don’t understand or justify rioting in your own neighborhood, but I do understand the frustration of the people. Its not just that the cops have killed an unarmed man…its that the cops have killed an unarmed man and NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT IT. No questioning, no arrest, no charges, not even a fucking psych evaluation. Thats the problem right there. If you or I shot someone in the same fashion, we’re under the jail until its time for sentencing. Police, in theory are held to a higher standard due to their training, etc…so when they fuck up, why shouldn’t they be detained..or (god forbid) arrested. The fact that dude can resign, walk away, meet with lawyers, create a story, have gov’t officials spin the story and THEN casually decide to turn himself in is some obscene bullshit. So i think when people say fuck the police, they really mean fuck the establishment that allows police to do unlawful shit (intentional or otherwise) without fear of reprisal. No matter your opinion, the death of oscar grant is morally & legally wrong and someone should be held accountable. What caused that riot is not this man’s death, its the poor response to proper justice being served. & I’m out…

  66. Im not sure if anyone saw but, that police officer did not just pull his GUN and it discharged, he AIMED and then Discharged his weapon. Oh and taser’s are bigger than guns. Nevertheless, Justice has really never been served on behalf of the victims, they might get money and a “sorry for your loss” . and the officer might get fired, or suspended, and maybe a Pending investigation. Cops do generalize though.

Because they see me, 19, african american, then i stole my benz. “Let me pull him over”, and that Im casing houses for a robbery, and they are actually my neighbors. once again, “Let me pull him over”

Mr. Police man Jumped the gun, literally.

  67. I really don’t know what to say. the sheer inhumanity of shooting a detained individual in the back is outrageous. did he really pose a threat to anybody in those handcuffs. oh yea i forget that was mother f’n Houdini and he was just about to break out and start wreaking havoc. but of course that was going to happen so an armed police officer had every right to shoot an unarmed black male in the black. oh yea i forgot about that. absolutely disgusting. Change? This aint gonna change. Justice? an empty cry into the wild of America. *Sigh* It’s time to pray for the family, for this country, for the community. I know Barack cant do anything directly about this. but maybe if that change he talked about so much really takes place a by product will be more respect for each other as individuals.
    R.I.P. Mr. Grant
    Time to Pray

  68. this shit makes me sick.. like i actually feel like shit knowing im the same species of that dumb fuck..

R.I.P. Oscar Grant, no man deserves that

  69. i know that people have said this before but the is fucked up beyond all means. it makes me want to beat the shit out of something, to know that one cop thinks that he has the right to take a mans life away.

  70. i could agree more with alot of you.
i live in oakland and i was at fruitvale bart the day before of the shooting.
as much as i am agrravated with the cops and see how this is COMPLETLY unnessacary i also show compassion to many of the people who lost their jobs/ business to yesterdays riot. really guys? smashing the windows of innocent ones and wrecking stores will not do anything but create further bad tension. and thats how ur saying ur getting back at the police?! thats fucked up if u wanna get back at the police get back at the fucking police. dont take the jobs of people who have families to provide for n shit. ALL of my condolences go to Oscar and his family. I do hate cops 100% i think they are ignorant pigs that think they have more authority because of a badge and a gun. however im saying lets all reconsider before jeprodizing the lives of the innocent over anger. R.I.P. Oscar and i hope all will be well for your family.
