Is Asher Roth’s Career Over w/ the Return of Eminem?

Last week when the Eminem freestyle hit the internets I immediately (see: after 100x plays of the record) wondered what would be happening to the career of Asher Roth. The comparisons have been made since his Greenhouse Effect mixtape was spread around and hasn’t stopped since. What will happen when Em actually makes his return. Would Asher have a chance at being successful? I personally don’t think the two are alike but a lot of people do. So why not use this cool poll option again haha. The illRoots fam also pose a different question. So what do the dopeboyz/girlz think? And don’t miss out on Em’s recent interview with Zane Lowe, shit is very in depth and a great listen.

  1. It’ll be tough but Asher will have to make himself stand out on his own. Its sad cause I dont think they are much alike.

  2. (Trying hard to avoid the entire skin color topic….)

They are completely different. Their style, flows, and content have nothing in common. Asher will most likely still blow up. People have said that they sound similar, but I disagree.

In before OMG WHITE RAPPERS THERE CAN ONLY BE 1!!!!!!!!!

  3. 2 white dudes that sound alike can’t survive in rap at the same time but 394823459823498219423 black guys can? are you serious?

  4. i think if they make a song together then asher would be fine but idk

  5. there needs to be an NMC board.

  6. ^ ye thats what i thought to but i don’t think so

  7. i think ash sounds alot like em. but in terms of flow and content they are very different. ash will be just fine.

  8. i think asher career was over before it started

  9. “2 white dudes that sound alike can’t survive in rap at the same time but 394823459823498219423 black guys can? are you serious?”

thats because the gimmick of being a token (emphasis on token) white rapper loses its novelty if more than one person is doing it.

  10. my honest opinion (like said in the post) is that these two are completely different in terms of content. asher sounds like em on occasion as far as voice, etc. but nothing as much to say they are identical. i believe ash will do just fine but it’s inevitable that people will always compare him to em. it’s just the way it is.

  11. i agree wit shake completely… they’re different artists that occasionally sound the same in their voice but not style. Asher just has to do something different than Em did and he’ll be straight

  12. i kinda actually think he’s got a lil hov in him.

  13. it’s fucked up how we do our fellow white brethern… in all seriousness I like Asher and I like Eminem for two completely different reasons. Obviously Em came first… and Ash can sound like him sometimes. But in due time if Asher keeps doing what he’s doing rappin about College, Cartoon Bitches, and etc… i’m sure people will see the major differences.

  14. “2 white dudes that sound alike can’t survive in rap at the same time but 394823459823498219423 black guys can? are you serious?”
    ^LMAO!

thats because the gimmick of being a token (emphasis on token) white rapper loses its novelty if more than one person is doing it.
^ smh at this excuse. if that aint a double standard i dont kno what is!

  15. i think two white rappers can exist at the same time but not two white rappers with the same style.

asher roth will have a tough time because he sounds just like eminem.

i think the real test to see if two white rappers can exist at the same time is to see how Kwame’s new artist Beyond Belief does when he drops his album since he is a white rapper with a COMPLETELY different style

  16. I personally don’t think much will happen in a negative or positive way. I think that they are both going in from different angles judging by the greenhouse effect and eminems recent freestyle (assuming that more tracks on the actual album will have that same theme/attitude).

  17. Honestly, everyone that visits this site seems to have enough (common) sense to know that these two are different emcees and people. The real question is, will the mainstream audience accept them. That remains to be seen. If Asher keeps dropping catchy songs like “I love college” I think he will be aight, cuz like someone said, he rhymes about college and cartoons. Em rhymes about his troubled upbringing and “stickin his dick inside a manicans ass”…..btw they’re not white rappers, they’re just rappers with a lighter skin tone…lol…race isn’t real, it’s just a figment of everyones imagination..seriously

yeah it kinda is, but it dont make shit less different. for the same reason we can say “cracka” and look normal but yall say “nigga” and its racist. blatant double standard, but still rings true.

  19. it shouldn’t end his career…but you’d be naive to think that it wouldn’t affect it.

Asher…if he can continue to rhyme well…and relate with the college crowd…he may find his own niche.

  20. maybe ash has versatilitize….. nah mean.

  21. asher is going to blow regardless… just because he’s white. i never liked eminem. i think he’s a little overrated.

  22. you kno how many black rappers sound alike?

and their voices are similar but their rap styles definitely are not. just compare Ems new track with an Asher Roth track, they talk about completely different stuff and say it in different ways.

  23. he’s done unfortunately.

  24. It’s a wrap for the kid. I hope Em puts him on a track and officially R.I.P the kid.

  25. Hopefully he’ll be aight. He’s in a whole different lane than Em like others said. He’s the college slacker type rapper. Em’s gonna get his money regardless but if Asher can break in the mainstream and get that good promotion he’ll be good.

I keep trying to tell people. It’s one thing to get noticed on the innanet. It’s a totally other thing to get play on TV/Radio etc. I think dude is funny and does his own thing so it’d be cool to see him succeed.

  26. people should listen to the lounge from the greenhouse effect.

  27. dude is weak in my eyes he seems more of gimmick than a rapper in my eyes i don’t believe in the product he’s selling which is supposed to be himself i don’t see it alls i see is an image

  28. i agree with Joe. Beyond Belief is hot and should be getting more burn than he’s receiving. The guy has a music video on nationally tv for goodness sake. asher only has a mixtape.

  29. That interview with Em is a really great listen…I think Asher Roth could have a bright future ahead of him, and I wouldn’t rule out Eminem “endorsing” Asher Roth, or at least speaking kindly about him. While they sound the same, Ahser Roth is a different guy, and his subject matter is in a different direction. Plus he will put out an album with SRC, meaning w/Akon & Steve Rifkind, meaning strong push. Meaning he’ll get a shot.

  30. Asher Roth brings out the high heels..
    Hes got it like that.

    lol

I agree, that altho they sound similar, they`re not- Im sure, as long as he keeps his talent fresh, roth will do as well as he is now- No clue if he`ll do better tho

  32. Kyle Lucas>Asher Roth

  33. Shake I love you meng, but how the hell do you “occasionally” sound like someone?????

Everyone that likes Asher, just got to come out admit voice wise
Asher is in the same lane with Shyne and Guerilla Black

Now the one reason Asher could survive is he has completely different content than Em, but then again, are y’all trying to listen to an entire album of white boy suburbia???

I am personally good on that, I can pop on MTV Made whenever I need a dose.

There is an idea. Asher needs to go on MADE and be made into his own rapper with his own voice.

When it comes down to it, black or white, we don’t need one more fucking rapper that sounds like one of our existing legends.

    im out.

  34. Asher doesnt just sound like Em… he pretty much is a reincarnation of him… Whether or not he will have a career is up to Eminem himself. He could easily end it with one of his trademark 4 bar career enders. Will he let Asher live.. thats the question

  35. asher sucks lolol

  36. Asher Roth is completely over rated… don’t feel that he should have even made the XXL Mag. cover. He has not proven anything to me yet… and its far b/c he’s white.

  37. wow….the hate is heavy on this one I see…

All I can say is, Shake was saying he occasionally sounds like Em because he occasionally carries a similar cadence (read: rhythm) as Em. But it’s not like Asher is deepening up his voice or putting a vocoder to it…if he resembles him in an audio sense, then so be it. It’s merely by sound…not by content or delivery. Asher is dope, and to say that he hasn’t proven anything yet is a joke in itself…the whole point of the cover was a “Who’s Up Next” type deal. What has CuDi proven? Mickey Factz? Ace “why the fuck am I here” Hood? Nothing…except that they can release mixtapes like everyone else until they get the major label studio debut shot.

  38. ^^^btw, I’m a fan of all the dudes on the cover with the exception of the aforementioned Mr. Hood…iamnotAhater, heISgarbage.

  39. Ash Roth Yall My Man

  40. whoever said Asher’s voice is similar to eminem but not his delivory either does not know what thoese words mean or does not listen very well

  41. wwooooowww you fuckers act like asher and em are the only two rappers who happen to be white.. are you all living under rocks? also, beyond belief is fucking terrible, how the hell you gonna even interject his name into this discussion?

off the top of my head i can list some dope white rappers

ra the rugged man, esoteric, apathy, celph titled, ill bill, necro, slaine, everlast, j the s, suffa (hilltop hoods), marc barz, gms, danny diablo, junkbots, majik most, onry ozzborn, sabac, sicknature, vinnie paz, big john, okwerdz, EVEN FUCKING KOSHA DILLZ

race doesnt matter in music, theres talent everywhere, you guys just arent informed enough

  43. kosha dillz is way doper and more progressive than this kat…kosha dillz is way iller than asher roth period…but they should link up anyways..

  44. ARE YOU PEOPLE KIDDING ME!? for all of you that say he sounds SIMILAR to eminem but they are different…..your crazy!!! come back down to earth!!! his voice is a COMPLETE BITE OFF OF EMINEM!! what do you think every white kid sounds like that?? or that its a coincidence!? its one thing to be influenced by a legend its another thing to just bite his style…all this kid did was bite his voice and rhyme scheme and just changed the subject to college dorm room crap!!! i dont really expect much anymore from the masses of this country tho i mean we voted bush into office TWICE. BACK IN THE DAY when hiphop was killing it, if you bit somebody elses style they would rip you off the stage and kick the crap out of you. thats why you had TUPAC, BIGGIE, NAS, JAYZ, WU TANG, MOBB DEEP, DRE, SNOOP ETC. all out at the same time!!! because the audience had STANDARDS!!! today you retards just EAT IT UP…..the game is filled with CRAP!! and now you will disrespect a legend that paved the way for originality by letting this idiot slide!? hes to eminem what gorilla black was to BIG…..if he blows its all over

  45. Please EMINEM Rules the best white rapper! But asher is ok he can try all he wants to be as good as EMINEM but he’ll fail fo sho so he might just want to back down now or it might not turn out very well

  46. I think asher will fail, basically a copy cat tribute to Em. None of his content has any interest or controversy, so why listen to someone saying they actually like college, and woman! no sh*t. Boring i’m afraid asher. Good luck though. haha.

  47. i heard some tracks for this guy, he’s aite but seriously overrated much overhyped

  48. Asher will do just fine. People have been connecting and relating completely different people together with nothing to back it up, since the beginning of time. Asher Roths flow is completely different than Eminems. Same with his style, concepts, vocabulary, and wordplay.

The *ONLY* things they have in common are their skin color, and the sound of their voices, which both things are genetic issues, so shouldn’t fucking matter.

This is coming from an artists ear, so I take everything in with great detail.

    -Joe
